What do you do to fit in a group?

 Day 47

When you move into a new country, new place, new group, new work, etc. one of the biggest challenge is the ability to become accepted and to fit in. In this procedure elements like language, culture, believes, body languages, etc. play a very important role. Social grouping plays a very important role in the aspect of fitting in and ideally people with like-mind group together. As a result, there are millions of different groups present in the world.

So here is my question: What do you do to fit in a group?

The grouping system is introduced to us from a very early age, maybe as early as the elementary school. The students in school will have groups like the poplar’s, the nerds, the internationals, the snobs, and many more such groups. The school cafeteria displays the social playground and we observe students with like-mind group together. We carry on this school tradition to our colleges, our work and our social adventures.

When we move to new surroundings, we are constantly in search to belong to a group to fit in. Simultaneously members from the new surroundings are observing and evaluating our behaviors’ and believe prior to considering the acceptance of the new member.

As humans the element of social acceptance is extremely important. To become accepted in the social culture, we can endure many changes that could include new dressing style, habits, behaviors, pretends, etc. Is manipulation of character common for people to fit into a group? Why are there hundreds of researches available to discover what group you belong? Why do employers perform personality test to analyze your personality type and group?

“If social acceptance, the grouping of like-mind is an important aspect, then why the phrase opposites attract”
